Review: The House Bunny

Chick 1 says:housebunny

I rented this to watch with a friend, thinking we might find a guilty pleasure movie.  I hadn’t really thought this would be very good but Anna Faris grew on me in the ads.

The Basics: A sweet but vapid Playboy Bunny gets thrown out of the Playboy mansion, the only home she’s ever known.  Through dumb luck (pun intended), she gets a job as a house mother at a sorority house populated by lovable losers whose charter is about to be taken away.  Hilarity ensues, supposedly.

What I Liked:  Anna Faris was indeed adorable.  She is both funny and I think she’s a decent actor.  (She’s also in really good shape.)  I definitely sympathised with her character.  Colin Hanks was also adorable as the romantic interest and I was surprised that the moment they met, I was completely sold on the romance, despite how different their characters are.  Um, it also has a great soundtrack.

What I Didn’t Like:  Where to start?  I wasn’t expecting a great or even good movie but, yikes.  The script is lame and pedestrian.  Aside from Faris and Hanks, most of the performances range from ”not the greatest” to “who did he sleep with to get that part?”  The story tries to tackle the inner vs outer beauty theme by calling it a tie but you can see the developments coming from a mile away.   And while, of course, a movie about a Bunny must have a cameo by Hugh Hefner and his “girlfriends” (ew), please folks, let’s keep it at a cameo.  Don’t expect him or the ladies to act.  Along with the rest of the cast, they were given far too much screen time.

Bottom Line: Stay away from this one.  Here’s hoping Faris and Hanks move on to greener pastures.
