I Can’t Wait: Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang

Chick 1 says:nannympheebigbang2

Loved, loved, loved Nanny McPhee!  The perfect blend of whimsy, humor, naughty children, and romance.    Emma Thompson adapted the screenplay from a children’s book and also starred.

She returns as producer, writer, and star for Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang.  The sequel also stars Maggie Gyllenhaal, Maggie Smith (2 good Maggies), Ralph Fiennes, and Rhys Ifans.  Great cast but I can’t decide from the trailer how this one is shaping up.  Of course, I wasn’t sure about the the first one and it’s one of my favorites.

Trailer Trash: Heath Ledger’s Last Performance

Chick 1 says:the-imaginarium-of-doctor-parnassus

You probably already know that when Heath Ledger died tragically two years ago, he was in the middle of filming the Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus.  The creative team behind the film, led by director Terry Gilliam, came up with what I think was an inspired solution to losing their star.  Apparently, the story involved Ledger’s character going through a mirror (a la Alice) three times.  When Ledger died, he had completed filming almost all the scenes on one side of the mirror.  Read more

I Can’t Wait: Robin Hood Trailer

Chick 1 says:

Finally!  A trailer for Robin Hood, starring Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett and directed by Ridley Scott.  Of course it looks well done.  Love the extreme close of the arrow leaving the bow.  I trust all the names involved but this still looks like lots of other epics out there.  Maybe I’m waiting for the soul of the movie to capture me.

Trailer Trash: A Slew of New Ones

Chick 1 says:knight-and-day

First peeks at several new films I’ve been curious about.  My reactions range from “meh” to “it might not be that bad”.

The Karate Kid: My feelings on this upcoming remake have been suspicious, especially the casting of Jackie Chan & Jaden Smith in the leads.  I have to admit this trailer had a nice energy but I’m still not convinced it has the heart the original one had.  Maybe I just still have a soft spot for Ralph Macchio. Lots of famous people are buried here.  Rocky Marciano, Benny Goodman, William Shakespeare.  I think he wrote Hamlet, Part 8: The Revenge here.

Randomness: JJ Abrams and his Mystery Box

Chick 1 says:

I’ve occasionally stumbled across Ted Talks on MentalFloss.com but I’ve never really had the time to explore them.  Yesterday I discovered this 20 minute manic and somewhat scattered speech by Lost & Alias creater, JJ Abrams.  While I do wish he had gone a little deeper into the topics, I appreciate his perspective on mystery & what good “action” movies are really about.  His thoughts reveal why he is such a successful writer and director.  Enjoy.

Review: Avatar

Chick 1 says:avatar

I have to admit that despite the fact that this was James Cameron’s first feature since the gargantuan Titanic, I really didn’t get what all the fuss was about.  But imagine with me, if you will, a world where George Lucas still had all this amazing technology available to him but he hadn’t forgotten how to direct actors or how to tell a decent story.

The Basics:  I won’t give more away than what’s in the trailers; a planet called Pandora with a native population, a crippled marine with the chance to live through another body, and some cool new technology (both in the movie & in the making of the movie). Read more

Quote of the Week

You leave me little notes on my pillow.  I told you 158 times I hate little notes on my pillow!  ”We are all out of corn flakes.  F.U.”  Took me 3 hours to figure out F.U. stood for Felix Ungar!

Review: Sherlock Holmes

Chick 1 says:sherlockholmes2

Merry Christmas to me!  Sherlock Holmes is out & it stars 2 very attractive men.  Hee, hee.

The Basics:  I’m assuming you know Sherlock from all the books, movies, and slew of cultural references (my favorite being “No s**t, Sherlock.”).  Here Guy Ritchie directs the latest update on the Victorian sleuth with Robert Downey Jr in the lead and Jude Law as Watson. Read more
